OHIO COLLEGIATE RECOVERY NETWORK

"No longer is treatment a reason for a young person to stop pursuing their academic goals and dreams. Collegiate recovery programs give them an opportunity to gain traction in recovery, especially early on, even while returning to the stresses of academia and temptations of life on a college campus."

-  William Moyers,

   Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation

A Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a college or university-provided program that includes a supportive environment within the campus culture. CRPs reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from addiction/substance use disorder.

OCAAR manages the Ohio Collegiate Recovery Network, an organized effort to support and unite each CRP, share best practices, navigate institutional structures, and oversee state funding by OHIO MHAS.

Don't see your school?

OCAAR's goal is to establish a CRP in every college campus in Ohio. If you see an opportunity at your campus and are interested in learning how to start a recovery program, contact Molly O'Neill at moneill@oca-ohio.org. Don't worry if you don't think you have the right job or title! The most effective social programs often start at the grassroots level.

Relapse rate each semester is low, at approximately 4% to 8%. (1)

Students in CRPs have almost a 90% graduation rate compared with a 61% institution-wide graduation rate. (1)

59% said that CRP participation was "extremely helpful" or "quite a bit" helpful.(1)

Get Active!

Maryland requires that schools in the University System of Maryland establish an on-campus CRP for students in recovery from substance abuse. New Jersey has a similar program.

Ohio should do the same! Contact your legislature.

Here's how:

Select and copy the text below. Feel free to add a personal message and use their name in the salutation.

Dear Representative,

I am writing to urge you to support a state mandate of collegiate recovery programs at all Ohio universities. These programs, like those at OSU, OU, Kent State, and Akron, provide essential support for students in recovery from substance use disorders, helping them achieve academic and personal success. By mandating such programs statewide, the way they do in Maryland and New Jersey, we can ensure that all students have access to the resources they need to thrive. Please consider this important initiative to foster healthier and more supportive campus environments across Ohio.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
